Concerns over Lions defence

GOALS are what people pay to see at football matches and just at the moment there are plenty of these where Heanor Town are involved.
The last seven games have produced 47, but the major problem is that the opposition have scored 21 of these and it is 13 games since the Lions last kept a clean sheet.

Ironically, that came in the 6-0 win over St Andrews at the Town Ground on October 10, so there will be something to prove when the teams go head to head for the return game on Saturday in Leicester kick off 3pm.

Joint manager Glenn Kirkwood commented: "We thought Danny Williams had an outstanding game last Saturday and we were pleased with the way Danny Bainbridge is starting to settle into the side.

"Danny was short of match practice when he joined us and it was important for both him and us to get 90 minutes under his belt at Barrow.

"Now he is starting to show what an important member of the side he will be for us in the future.

"We are continuing to work on things in training and we are still trying to bring in players.

Bonus

"One bonus for us is the return to the side after injury of goalkeeper Sam Ogrizovic.

"Sam held his hand up accepting the responsibility for Greenwood's winner last Saturday, but apart from that he had an outstanding game and we were very pleased with his performance and contribution."

But for all the good work which the Lions defence put in there is still a lack of mobility in it and that certainly cost the team the points last Saturday against Greenwood Meadows.

Heanor felt though that they were not helped by the antics and inconsistency of the match referee.

At least six occasions where the ball was kicked deliberately away went without punishment as did two deliberate hand ball offences.

It is not the first time Heanor have had a brush with referee Steve Watts this season.

They were not happy with his officiating when the Lions went down to a late goal at Radcliffe Olympic in August and felt that there appeared to be little improvement since.

But the Heanor management will be the first to admit that they lost the game through their own efforts rather than anyone else's.

Greenwood were a strong, physical and very skilful side and their performance probably stood them out as one of the best sides to visit the Town Ground this season as their wonderful away record would seem to justify.

Reserves

Heanor Town Reserves lost narrowly at Dunkirk Reserves last Saturday although it was one of their better performances of the season and this augers well for the visit to the Town Ground of Sutton Town AFC Reserves on Saturday (3pm) when winning ways might well return to the team.
