IN the Windsor Food Service North Midlands Under 19's League's final week of the season all eyes were on Alfreton Town as they fought to make it a clean sweep by adding the Division One League title and the League Cup to the Mini Shield they won the previous Thursday.
On Monday in the League Cup final at Staveley MW’s Inkersall Road ground, a crowd of 350 watched a great game between Alfreton Town and Sheffield Club with both sides playing excellent football.
Sheffield though started the better and Danny McKenz
ie broke the deadlock when after some good play he walked the ball into an empty net on 33 minutes.
Alfreton fought hard to get back into the game but it was Sheffield who looked the more likely to score.
After the break Alfreton had a good opening spell but the game was turned on it’s head when from a corner they had a header that crashed against the bar and was scrambled clear.
Five minutes later that man Danny McKenzie again ended a flowing move to score his second and his best goal of the night to give Sheffield a two goal lead.
Alfreton fought hard but found Sheffield’s defence in superb form and their chances were very limited and with three minutes remaining man of the match Ted Cribley in a counter attack rounded two players before firing home the best goal of the night to give Sheffield a deserved 3-0 victory after a game that was a credit to both sides and the league.
After the game the financial director of league sponsors Windsor Food Services presented the medals to both sides and to Worksop Town winners of Division Three, Staveley the runners up and to Teversal the Division Two winners and Shirebrook Town the runners up.
Not to be outdone though Alfreton Town under their excellent manager Neil Cluxton bounced back on Thursday night to win the coveted Division One title when they beat Handsworth 2-0 at the Impact Arena.
Alfreton always had the edge but Handsworth fought hard all the way before two goals in a minute on 42 and 43 by Joe Storer and Jacob Walters-Lang respectively gave them deservedly the title leaving Dunkirk finishing runners up.
After the game Barry Crownshaw the league treasurer presented Alfreton with the trophy ,their second of a very successful season for the club.
In the leagues final game of the season third in Division Two Mickleover Sports suffered a shock 1-0 home defeat to Carlton Town who were already relegated but bounced back to win their first away game of the season.
