THE TOTAL in our Jubilee Jam Jars Appeal stands at an impressive £200 this week.
We have been bowled over by your generosity towards our special community Diamond Jubilee fundraising campaign in tribute to the Queen.
But we need to keep going – so keep hunting for those pennies down the back of sofa and collecting in jars around the house as we push on to the £300 mark.
We have teamed up with Amber Valley Borough Council and aim to plant a fitting new tree in each town, along with commemorative plaques to mark the 60-year reign of Queen Elizabeth II.
We are asking you to donate the spare pennies you have stored in jam jars and pots in your homes and the likes and you have certainly been doing that.
Editor Julie Crouch said: “We figured that if everyone donated just a few pennies it would take no time at all to raise the money needed to pay for the trees and the plaques.”
The council is now looking for fitting trees and suitable places in Ripley, Heanor and hopefully Alfreton too for them to be planted.
This week it was revealed venues being considered were Heanor Memorial Park, Crossley Park in Ripley and hopefully Alfreton Park in Alfreton.
Sharon Thomas, council landscape manager, said: “We’re thrilled to be a part of the Jam Jar Appeal with the planting of trees in parks in all of our towns.”
The News is looking to raise around £300, but if we exceed that amount, then we may well be able to plant another tree or ask readers to nominate other causes and charities to receive cash.
Julie added: “Learning we have reached £200 this week is just fantastic and we are so grateful to readers for their generosity.
“We need to keep going thought– I know we can do it – just keep donating your pennies by dropping them off at our office in Grosvenor road and let’s really mark the jubilee in style!
“The tree will not be planted until the autumn so we have plenty of time to get there.
“Here’s to having a permanent community reminder of the Diamond Jubilee.
If you wish to donate your jam jars of cash you can drop them off at our office in Ripley at 27 Grosvenor Road, DE5 3JE.
We will do the rest. We will print updates in the newspaper, online at www.ripleyandheanornews.co.uk, on Twitter @rhnews and on Facebook at Ripley News to keep you up to date on how we are doing.
