A WAINGROVES community group is shaping up to celebrate in style after saving a nearby woodland from being sold.
When cement company, Hanson Heidelberg announ-ced it would be selling Strelley Woods, the Waingroves community rallied together to raise the money to purchase the land.
A year of fundraising events saw the villagers raise more than £20,000.
Waingroves Community Woodland Trust, the group set up to manage the woods, will complete the purchase of the land on Wednesday, June 22. A week of celebrations has been planned to mark the event, including tours of the woods and an open air service.
Chairman of Community Woodland Trust John Stamp said: “For such a small community this is a very significant event and we intend to celebrate in style.”
The week of events will begin on Monday, June 20, starting with a nature walk of the woods led by Gary Wain of Groundwork Derby and Derbyshire.
The deeds will officially be handed over to the woodland Trust at 10am on the Wednesday morning with events culminating in the official opening of the woods at noon on the Saturday. A barbecue, children’s activities, and music are planned at Waingroves Wood and Community Centre on the day. On the Sunday, a thanksgiving service will be held at 10.45am.
