WAINGROVES Community Woodland was officially opened on Saturday following a week of celebrations to mark the triumph of a community group.

Waingroves Community Woodland Trust had raised more than £20,000 to purchase the woods from cement company Hanson Heidelberg.

The deal was completed on Wednesday, June 22, when the deeds were officially handed over to the Trust.

Celebrations started with a nature walk of the woods led by Gary Wain, of Groundwork Derby and Derbyshire.

The official opening took place at noon on Saturday, and featured a barbecue, children’s activities and music at Waingroves Wood and Community Centre.

On Sunday, a thanksgiving service was held.

The woodland was created on the site of a former colliery in 1923 and Waingroves Community Association had leased the land for the past ten years before buying it.
