YOUNGSTERS from Waingroves have been learning about an old Derbyshire tradition.
The pupils from Waingroves Primary School have been working with members from Waingroves Chapel to produce a stunning well dressing for this year’s event in the village.
Children from Year 4 Class helped create the well dressing, which depicted a scene from Waingroves Wood, which villagers have just clubbed together to buy for the community to continue using after owner Hanson Heidelberg decided to put it up for sale.
The wood was created on the site of an old colliery in 1923. For the past ten years it has been tended by Waingroves Community Association, which led the fight to raise cash to buy the woods, which it took ownership of in October last year. They did not want to see it built on or sealed off, but wanted residents to be able to continue to enjoy it.
They managed to raise the £60,000 needed and bought the 13-acre site off Pit Lane in the village.
