Codnor & District WI were hosts to friends from other WIs in the area for their Annual Cream Tea. The speaker Jo Carter gave a riveting talk entitled ‘A Design for Life – the story of Laura Ashley’.
She spoke of Laura’s childhood in London and Wales during the Second World War and her fascination for designing clothes from her grandmother’s nightdress; how she went from a penniless housekeeper to a reckless spendthrift husband to owning houses, a yacht and helicopter and to her unfortunate early death at the age of 60. Thanks were given to Jo by Joy Brown, president.
A delicious cream tea was enjoyed by all, as was the chance to chat with friends. The proceeds from the raffle were for our charity.
The next meeting is on Tuesday, September 3, when the speaker will be Barbara Daykin MBE with a talk entitled, ‘I caught the alligator.’ The September Lunch Club is an evening meal at The Greyhound, Higham.
