Votes for cinema bid at Giltbrook

Moves to bring a brand new cinema complex to Giltbrook Retail Park are underway.

Broxtowe councillor Richard Robinson launched a major campaign after being lobbied by local residents and businesses on the Retail Park.

Cllr Robinson, who serves on the Broxtowe Borough council cabinet with portfolio responsibility for Arts, Culture and Leisure, said: “I am overwhelmed with the positive response so far, and am grateful to the many people who have signalled their support. It is not very often you get over 1000 people saying they actually support something, as they normally write to oppose. I am confident that working together we can realise our goal of providing a new cinema for our area.”

Cllr Robinson has already met on side twice with Savoy Cinema managing director James Collington last year, and says the task is now to gain as much public support and then present the owners of Giltbrook Retail Park with a final submission next month.

An online petition was launched at the beginning of February. Cllr Robinson has so far received 1,223 votes in favour, 500 signatures on petitions, more than 50 emails and nearly 100 texts or returned survey slips. Just 35 people have expressed their objection to the plans, concerned about traffic issues. Visit richardsrobinson.org.uk/cinema-project-2013-giltbrook-retail-park.
