Cast members of The Sorcerer left onlookers spellbound with an exclusive open-air performance of the Gilbert and Sullivan classic on the Buxton Opera House forecourt.
The impromptu serenade by Oxbridge Opera Company kick-started a fortnight of glittering G&S shows to liven up the long summer nights.
Containing some of the finest melodies Sullivan ever wrote, The Sorcerer will be performed at the opera house tonight (Friday) and tomorrow (Saturday).
It will be followed by The Mikado from Thursday August 14 to Saturday August 16. Set in the zany flashy world of modern fashion houses, The Mikado is an energetic production featuring costumes inspired by Jean Paul Gaultier.
A Feast of Gilbert and Sullivan on Sunday August 17 will recapture all the fun and magic of the original D’Oyly Carte Opera Company, with the 37-piece British Philharmonic Orchestra performing sections of every Gilbert & Sullivan opera.
Derby Gilbert and Sullivan Company will round off the season with performances of two contrasting G&S operas: The Pirates of Penzance on Thursday August 21 and Friday August 22, and The Yeomen of the Guard on Saturday August 23.
Tickets for the shows, priced from £16 to £26, are available from the box office on 0845 127 2190 or online at www.buxtonoperahouse.org.uk.
