Union’s clash with college sparks more strike action

FIVE more days of strike action are planned at Aldercar Community Language College.

NASUWT members have already taken eight days of strike action over the compulsory redundancy of a teacher and will now strike on November 17, 18, 21, 22 and 25. The union claims governors have refused to meet and says more action could be taken. NASUWT executive member Dave Wilkinson said: “Instead the management put their efforts into organising babysitting of pupils as a substitute for genuine lessons.”

The school has remained open during the dispute.

Headteacher Tony Cooper said: “At no time have the governors, school or local authority refused to meet with him. To threaten further strike action simply because someone has not met him is disappointing. The key word here is ‘our’ as these are our pupils towards whom we have the greatest responsibility, perhaps unlike others who are at least one step removed from them.”
