A HEANOR mother and son are impressing their neighbours with a towering sunflower that has sprung up since spring.

Julie McGarry, 51, and her son, eight-year-old Aaron Purdy, from Nelson Street, planted the now 11ft tall monster flower in April. But other than watering it once a day, charity shop volunteer Julie says she does not know the secret to their growing success.

She said: “We can’t understand how it has grown this big this year. We don’t have a secret really - we just pop it in the front garden and water it a bit!”

The family have grown one for the past three years and have a friendly competition with neighbours every summer to see who can grow the biggest.
