Central England Co-operative is holding a series of two-day workshops in its Co-op food store on Derby Road, Ripley, throughout September to help tackle youth unemployment.

Young people aged 16–24 from in and around Ripley have the opportunity to gain a qualification along with the skills
needed to increase their chances of gaining employment as part of the Co-op’s ‘Journey to a Job’ campaign.

On the first day of the workshop, participants will be guided through skills involved in how to find and get a job, such as writing a CV and interview techniques.

The second day of the workshop focuses on how to keep a job and will address topics like positive attitudes and personal presentation.

Both sessions will be followed by practical work experience in the food store so that the young people can develop their employability chances and gain insight into a retail environment as well as
completing a Level 1 in Food Safety course.

Central England Co-operative will be holding more than 30 workshops throughout September in food stores, florists and funeral homes around its trading area as part of its Journey to Job
programme.

It forms a part of IGD’s (The Institute of Grocery Distribution) Feeding Britain’s Future campaign which highlights September as Skills for Work Month.

Jane Firth, Learning and Development Manager at Central England Co-operative said:

“Following the success of last year’s Journey to a Job initiative, we have increased the number of workshops from just six to over 30.

“These are a great opportunity for young people to learn valuable skills in finding, getting and keeping a job.

“Working with our HR and Retail teams as well as Job Centre Plus, we hope that young people in Ripley who have a lot of potential can use the skills and experience learnt to find a role, whether it’s with our Society or another organisation.”

The Journey to a Job programme forms a part of Central England Co-op’s Corporate Responsibility strategy which aims to empower people to help themselves by focusing on areas of real need.
