staff at a Matlock store have been working up a sweat to raise money for a worthy cause.

Around 50 workers at Sainsbury’s took part in a virtual Matlock to Paris bike ride in the name of Sport Relief.

The staff members took it in shifts to cycle the 580 kilometres on two cycling machines.

Mike Clay, deputy store manager, said: “We started out on Friday and each person did half and hour on the bike.

“We got to Paris at about 2pm on Saturday and we kept on going.

“We did between 600 and 700 kilometres.”

The event was part of a weekend of activities in store in aid of Sport Relief, for which Sainsbury’s is the official sponsor.

Mike said: “There cakes for sale in the staff restaurant, which were made by colleagues.

“We had collections on checkouts, we raffled a cake which one of the colleagues had made and we had a tombola with prizes.”

Prior to the event, one of the store’s staff members, Phil Greaves, had been selected to go to Mansfield and take part in the Sport Relief mile with the company’s chief executive, Justin King.

A worker was selected from each of the region’s 17 stores to take part in the event and throughout the day Justin ran about 32 miles in aid of the charity.

Mike said: “We haven’t got a final figure yet, but hopefully with all the activities the sale of scratch cards in store we will have raised about £5,000.”

Cubs from 5th Matlock (All Saints) Scouts also managed to raise money for Sport Relief.

The youngsters raised £300 by doing laps of Hall Leys Park, in Matlock - smashing their original target of £100.
