A popular tourist attraction in Shipley is set to become more eco-friendly after Derbyshire County Council approved a bid to have solar panels installed on its roof.

Shipley Country Park visitors’ centre will have the panels put in thanks to part of a £200,000 fund released by the authority to lessen the carbon impact of some of Derbyshire’s corporate buildings.

The council has also released £300,000 to spend on panelling the county’s schools.

At Shipley Country Park, a digital display will show visitors how much the attraction is reducing its carbon footprint by.

A report by the authority states that the panels show the county council’s commitment to carbon reduction: “The installation of a realtime display showing how much energy is being generated and how much carbon is being saved, providing an educational resource that compliments the purpose and ethos of the country park.”

Four other buildings will share in the £200,000 solar panel fund, including County Hall in Matlock.
