Police are appealing for information following a suspected arson attack on a barn in Smalley that saw 40 animals killed.

The fire started in a farm building off Main Road, close to Smalley crossroads, at about 7.50pm on Wednesday, September 3.

Thirty rabbits, six cats, several kittens and a number of chickens were killed in the fire, which destroyed the barn.

A joint investigation held by Derbyshire Fire and Rescue and police found that the blaze was started deliberately.

Officers investigating the arson want to hear from witnesses or anyone with information that could help the inquiry.

They are particularly keen to trace a van driver who was spotted in the area at about 4.45pm on the day of the fire.

The man was driving a white Transit van and said he was looking for an address in Main Road, Smalley.

The blaze forced police to close part of the road for several hours while firefighters brought it under control and an investigation was carried out.

A van was also damaged in the incident and a number of vintage cars were also set alight.

Witnesses or anyone with information should call Derbyshire police on 101, quoting crime reference 37145/14.
