A Heanor sculptor has taken up a prime position at the prestigious RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

This is the second visit to the show in as many years for Rachel Carter, who has created Heanor’s Wings and Wheels sculpture at the junction of Derby Road and Market Street in Heanor. She also creates sculptural pieces for gardens and landscapes using woven willow from her Ilkeston base at the creative Shed 2 Studios.

Her visit to the 2010 show was funded by the Arts Council and the University of Derby. After picking up several commissions, Rachel has been able to fund her stand at this year’s event.

She said: “I only just made it to last year’s show after suffering a serious hand injury which left me without the use of my left hand for a short time, however, using my right hand and my chin I managed to complete my sculptures in time for show! The additional work certainly paid off as it allowed me to fund my return to this year’s show,”
