Save historic Sawmills bridge

Civic chiefs are urging councillors to postpone their plans to demolish a historic bridge.

Since 1988, around 22 lorries have hit the disused railway bridge at Sawmills, over the A610, between Ambergate and Ripley.

The 250-tonne bridge is set to be demolished next March or April.

But members of the Bullbridge and Sawmills Area Civic Society say the £150,000 cost of demolition is unnecessary. They are now calling for county councillors to look at their plans again.

Society secretary Gill Hirst said: “What we are trying to do now is get them to postpone it a bit longer to have more thought on it.

“We do feel it’s not been well considered as it should have been.”

Members want the bridge to be adopted as a greenway for walkers and horse riders.
