A DENBY church bloomed at the weekend when it became the venue for a flower festival.

St Mary’s Church was filled with arrays of flowers along the theme of ‘Beside the Sea’ and there was a Songs of Praise service on Sunday.

The church also hosted Keele University Concert Band for a fundraising show on the Friday night as part of a campaign to repair the church roof after thieves stole lead in five separate raids last year.

The grade I listed building is faced with a £45,000 repair bill and the damage has increased the heating bill.

Church Warden for the 45 strong congregation, Christine Davies said: “The lead need replacing and we are hoping to put an alternative material to lead on - possibly stainless steel.

“Diocese up and down the country have been hit by thefts.”

To make a donation to the repair fund please call church warden Christine Davies on 01332 780661.
