Riders roaring rally round the county

If you heard a deafening roar through Ripley on Wednesday, chances are it was the Velocette Owners’ Club as they completed their yearly rally through Derbyshire.

The 54 riders, all on vintage Velocette bikes dating as far back as 1926, began the tour of the county at Midland Railway – Butterley, before heading to Chattsworth, Eyam and Castleton among others along the route. Club chairman Rodney Wildsmith, of Main Road, Whtstandwell, said the British made bikes are still popular because of their build quality. He said: “They were expensive when I was 20, and I could never afford one. Thankfully now I can - they are for more relaxing to ride than these modern bikes!”
