Ripley and District University of the Third Age (U3A) - a self-help local organisation for people aged 50 or over no longer in full-time employment held their monthly meeting at St Joseph’s Hall on Butterley Hill, Ripley.
Chairman Peter Smith welcomed 60-plus members and gave out notices concerning the activities planned for next year, including advance notice of the AGM in February and then handed over to the organisers for the annual Christmas Quiz. Teams of four answered Christmas-related questions.
After the refreshment break of coffee, tea and mince pies organised by the Genealogy Group, the quiz continued and after a close finish, with a deciding question the eventual winners were The Smurts (Peter Smith, Pat Smith, Rosie Burt and Alan Cottam) who received a bottle of wine each. Runners up were The Ferrers Funnies who received a U3A Pen, while the booby prize of a Christmas cracker each was collected by The Senior Stars team.
The chairman thanked the organisers – Mary and Paul Smith and Bernice and Robert Lawrence and wished all the best. The next meeting is Thursday, January 19, at St Joseph’s Church Hall at 2pm.
