STAFF at the Thorn Tree pub, in Waingroves, have presented Ripley Hospital’s League of Friends with a cheque for £172 thanks to an expanding pot of money.

Landlord, Chris Buxton, 50, started a change collection pot on the bar for the league last year. When the pot began to fill up with money, Chris ran a competition where his punters could guess how much change was in it for the coveted prize of eight pints of beer.

Pubgoers donated a pound to have a guess in hope of claiming the prize and before long the expanding pot of cash had reached the princely sum of £172.

Chris said: “We just wanted to do something for a local charity and the league of friends was a unanimous choice.”

The real ale specialising pub on Church Street, Waingroves, will be having a beer festival on April 29 to mark the royal wedding.
