Polls open for youth vote

Competition is hotting up for places on the Derbyshire Youth Council as young people prepare to go to the polls.

The Big Vote election is held every two years and gives youngsters aged 11 to 18 the chance to to represent young people in the county.

This year, 205 young people will compete for 55 places on Derbyshire Youth Council, representing secondary schools, special schools, support centres, 11-19 colleges and children in care.

A week of voting started on Monday and ends this Friday.

Results will be announced on Thursday March 29.

Cabinet member for young people, Cllr Barry Lewis said: “I think it is extremely important that young people get involved in the democratic process. Derbyshire Youth council offers young people a valuable opportunity to have their say.”
