THE PLAN to extend the Lodge House opencast mine in Smalley is due to be decided by Derbyshire County Council’s planning committee today.
Smalley parish and Amber Valley borough councils, having previously offered no objections to the plans, have now both raised concerns with the authority which will be taken into account at the meeting on today, October 13.
County and Amber Valley borough councillor for the area Kevin Parkinson is opposed to the plans and has urged residents to attend the meeting at County Hall in Matlock at 2pm to make their voices heard.
He said: “I have a hope that, if the local community’s views are heard and seriously considered by the planning board, the application will be refused.”
UK Coal plans to extend the current 300-acre site near the village by a further 192 acres, north towards Heanor.
