EREWASH’S new Mayor – a Sandiacre councillor – has been elected for the new Civic Year.

Cllr Jennifer Hulls, who has been deputy Mayor since May last year, received her chains from outgoing Mayor Cllr Kevin Miller at the full council meeting on Thursday.

Labour councillors nominated long-standing Ilkeston councillor Glennice Birkin for the post but were outvoted.

Cllr Hulls said: “Over the past year I have carried out over 50 civic engagements as deputy Mayor. I hope to meet as many residents as possible over the coming year.”

Her charities for the year ahead are the Mercian Regiment Benevolent Fund and Action For Children.

She and husband Robert, a former Basingstoke borough councillor, who will be her consort during the Civic Year, moved to Dale Abbey in 1990.

Born in Leeds, the former physiotherapist spent two years in Tanzania, working at a leprosy clinic.

The deputy Mayor was elected as Stanton-by-Dale councillor Val Clare, whose husband Jeffrey, 66, was reported missing at sea last month. She thanked councillors for their support at the meeting.

Also during the meeting, Labour councillor John Frudd, who represents Kirk Hallam, received a long service award after 20 years on the council.
