A LABOURER working in the one of the oldest parts of Matlock has discovered a bizarre object beneath the ground.

Luke Stanbrook, of Olbea Homes, was working on the new apartment development at Horseshoe Mews, on the site of the old Three Horseshoes pub, in Matlock Green, when he found a huge stone trough.

The mysterious object measures approximately ten feet by four feet.

It was buried about two foot below ground level.

The purpose of the large stone container has baffled James Collins, who owns where it was found.

He said: “It is so huge, bigger than any trough I have seen in Derbyshire, even at Chatsworth.

“It would be interesting to know why such a big trough is here on this site.”
