Derby Crown Court heard on Monday how Daniel Slaney, 23, of Carlton Avenue, Darley Dale, assaulted the girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, between 2012 and 2014.

Prosecuting barrister Mark van der Zwart told the court Slaney had also got his victim pregnant before she miscarried.

He had originally denied committing offences despite DNA tests linking him to the exhumed foetus.

However, Slaney finally pleaded guilty to two counts of rape in Darley Dale and the charges were treated as multiple incident rapes over two years.

The complainant stated the ordeal led to her self-harming with a razor and she had even thought about taking her own life.

Defence barrister Sonal Ahya said Slaney’s offending was down to complex feelings of inadequacy and immaturity but he is now recognising the impact of his actions.

Judge Jonathan Bennett confirmed the charges encompassed multiple incidents of rape which he described as “horrific offences”.

Judge Bennett said: “This was nothing other than a campaign of rape.”

He also described the complainant as “incredibly brave” when she told police what had happened.

Judge Bennett sentenced Slaney to nine years of custody and ordered that he be made subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order indefinitely.
