Suspicious death Derby Road, Ripley September 2011.

Police were called to the ground floor flat on Derby Road by an ambulance crew at 12.30am. On arrival they found a 36-year-old man dead, who has been named as Richard Peake, of Laurel Avenue, Ripley.

A police spokeswoman said: “We are treating the death as suspicious. Two people present at the scene, a 39-year-old man and an 22-year-old woman, are helping the police with their enquiries.”

The woman has since been released without charge. The man has been bailed pending further inquiries.

A post-mortem examination was carried out on Tuesday, but police say further tests are required to fully establish the circumstances of the death.

The flat, next door to the Derby Road Fish Bar, was sealed off with police officers on guard on Tuesday morning.

Concerned friends of the flat’s other occupant gathered outside to ask officers about the identity of the dead man.

An officer was able to reassure them that the dead man was not their friend.

One friend, Sally Cooper, 39, said: “I was shocked. The first thing I did was ring his mum to see if it was true. She said as far as she knew he was okay. She had heard nothing about it at all.”

Another friend Alan Edwards, 40, said: “I heard about it at 8.20am – one of the neighbours came and knocked on the door. They said someone had been killed on Derby Road.

“As far as we knew it was our friend who died. We’re very relieved that he’s okay.”

At 9.30am scenes of crime officers arrived and donned white suits before entering the property to carry out detailed forensic investigations in a bid to establish what has happened.

The front door of the flat appeared to have been scuffed and kicked and the letter box was jammed with police tape.

Mr Edwards added that the social networking site Facebook was awash with talk about the incident.

Friends of the occupant had posted their fears for him, as well as speculation concerning the identity of the dead man, he said.

If anyone has information about the incident they are asked to call Ripley CID on 0345 123 3333.
