A man has died after a fire at an industrial unit in Alfreton.

The 27-year-old from South Normanton died at the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham on Saturday, May 26.

The blaze broke out at a unit on an industrial estate in Lydford Road at around 12.10pm. Three men were injured and taken to hospital. Two were released later that afternoon, the third, who has not yet been named, died. He had suffered burn injuries.

The road was closed while fire crews fought the blaze, but was later re-opened but police remained yesterday. A joint investigation will begin today involving police, the fire service and the Health and Safety Executive to establish what happened and how the man died.

Residents living in the Lydford Road area had been advised to keep their windows and doors closed while emergency services tackle a fire.

A police spokesman said due to the smoke from the fire and possible harmful chemicals it may have contained, residents were asked to keep their windows and doors closed as a precaution.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
