Carers

Young carers in Derbyshire are being invited to a special celebration marking their exceptional work.

The event has been organised by Derbyshire Young Carers and takes place from 4pm to 8pm on July 11 at The Post Mill Centre in South Normanton.

Karen Martin, of Derbyshire Young Carers Service which is part of national children’s charity Action for Children, said: “We will be doing a consultation with young carers in conjunction with Health Watch Derbyshire and will then be having a party.

“Young Carers are climbing up everybody’s agenda at the moment and there has been a lot of information in the news about how they are a very hidden group in society,” Karen explained.

“The new Children and Families Bill has included young carers and is putting emphasis on adult/children’s services to provide support to the cared for person to reduce the amount of caring young people have to do.”

A young carer is someone under the age of 18 years who provides regular and significant care to a relative or sibling who suffers from a physical illness or disability, a mental illness or drug/alcohol misuse.
