More than 600 colourfully dressed pupils and staff flew into the record books with the world’s largest ‘Superman’ dance at Mill Hill School.

The Ripley school wore flourescent 1980s dance gear and performed an en masse choreographed routine to the Black Lace chart hit of the same name.

Head teacher Sarah Graham said the school’s efforts have not only landed them a place in the Guinness Book of Records, but has raised more than £5,000 for the charity Mencap.

She said: “Apart from the weather, it went fantastic .They really threw themselves into their eighties gear too!”

The world record was verified by nine independent witnesses, which included Amber Valley Mayor Cllr John Nelson, beating the previous benchmark of 369.

Two attempts have already been made to break it this year, but both have failed according senior fundraiser Marie Brown of Mencap.

She said the charity had been working with the school to put on a fundraising event. From a list of 12 possible record attempts, staff and pupils chose to put on the largest Superman dance .

Marie said: “Instead of the traditional boring stuff , we wanted something that would be fun to do – and give them the chance to be a world record holder.

“Just look at them, they had such fun, everyone really engaged in it - we wanted to give them something really special.”

A total of 667 soaked through participants beat the record on Friday, with the attempt broadcast live by Amber Sound FM .

After taking part 15-year-old Georgia Durose said: “Some people are leaving next year so it is something for us to remember!”
