Woman pedestrian killed during the walk home

A WOMAN was killed in a road accident as she walked home after she could not afford a taxi ride home because she was short of cash, an inquest heard.

Police believed Wendy Anne Burton-Wood, 56, was struck from behind by a van driven by Michael Holt, of Tor Rise, Matlock, on the A615 Wessington to Tansley road.

She was believed to have visited the Horse and Jockey pub in Wessington on August 13, before the landlord called Amber Taxis, Alfreton, to book her a 9pm ride home. But she was unable to pay for the lift and was forced to walk.

Ms Burton-Wood, of Malthouse Lane, Ashover, had died from multiple injuries, including a fractured skull. Post-mortem tests found she had drunk more than two and a half times the limit for motorists - enough to impair her judgement. There were no defects on the van, no evidence to suggest it was breaking the 50mph limit, and the driver gave a negative breath test. The coroner recorded a verdict of accidental death on Ms Burton-Wood.
