Weapon found in man’s sock
An Alfreton man caught with a knuckle-duster inside his sock claimed he carried it to deter would-be attackers.
Police stopped a Ford Fiesta after following it from a Somercotes car park and detained passenger Ishuenopa Shinda
“He was asked if he had anything on him and he removed a knuckle-duster he had in his left sock and handed it to the officer.
“He was arrested and made no comment during a police interview,” prosecutor Helen Griffiths told Chesterfield magistrates.
Shinda, 21, of Preston Avenue, admitted possessing an offensive weapon on August 27. He committed a similar offence two years ago.
The justices handed him a one-year probation supervision order, with £85 costs, and ordered that the knuckle-duster be destroyed.
“An officer had overheard a conversation between him and the driver about some racial abuse. It was a stop and search and he voluntarily produced the knuckle-duster.
“He lives in a predominantly white area and he and his family have suffered a lot of abuse since moving in there 11 years ago,” Gazala Abbasi, for Shinda., told the magistrates court.
She added: “He had received a number of threats from people in the locality that something would happen to him and his family.
“He says he would have used the knuckle-duster to scare them off if there was more than one.
“There has been violence in the past and his opinion is that police are not interested because he has a criminal record.”
Shinda, who served time in a young offenders’ institution in 2010, was doing a two-year sports development course at college and hoped to go to university, said Ms Shinda.
