Village green bid launched

CAMPAIGNERS working to stop a Morrisons supermarket plan in Ripley have submitted a bid to adopt Nottingham Road Recreation Ground as a village green.

If successful the land would be protected under the Commons Registration Act 2006.

The status, which prevents development on land there, can be granted by Derbyshire County Council if a ‘significant number’ of people in the area have used the land for more than 20 years.

As the bid, backed by Ripley Town Council, requires supporting applications from members of the community, village green registration forms have been posted to a number of homes in the Ripley area.

Leader of the town council Steve Freeborn said: “The more questionnaires we get returned the stronger the case we have.”

Morrisons say the 40,000 sq ft store would create 350 jobs.
