VANDALS ON RAMPAGE
MINDLESS vandals went on the rampage at Waingroves at the weekend damaging wing mirrors, wipers and aerials on approximately 12 vehicles.
Residents believe its gangs of youths making their way from Ripley to Codnor after a night on the town between 12.30am - 2am.
They say that youths are using Waingroves Road as a shortcut and are causing damage along the way.
The latest attack on vehicles follows a series of incidents throughout the year. In one incident on March 11 vehicles were damaged, eight cars in another and isolated incidents inbetween.
Said one resident: "Police have said this isnt a hot spot for crime, but the temperatures rising.
"Its just mindless vandalism. Some people have to work for a week just to pay for the damage these vandals are causing.
"All we want is for a police officer to patrol the area on foot when the clubs turn out and we will give the officer all the help we can. Police need to catch them in the act.
"We want these yobs to pay for the damage they are doing.
"Residents say they have reported incidents of youths on cars to the police and their word has been doubted. We want co-operation to stamp out these incidents once and for all."
A police spokeswoman said at the time of these incidents at Waingroves, police officers were dealing with a fight in Ripley.
PC Bob Lee, crime prevention officer said these are a group of people making their way from Ripley to Codnor and when they have finished their drinking for some reason they take it out on the vehicles. "We are looking at ways to counteract this problem.
"Extra patrols have been in the area and we have had several clear weeks when no damage has been done and out of the blue the vandalism starts again,
"We have discussed the problem with a resident and although we want them to be vigilant, we dont want them to put themselves at risk."
