UPDATE: Train lines now open following death on the tracks in Derbyshire

Services are now running after a person was hit by a train although Network Rail say there could be knock on delays.

Emergency services have now dealt with the incident between Sheffield and Chesterfield allowing the line between the stations to reopen. Services between Sheffield and Nottingham / Derby may still be delayed by up to 20 minutes whilst services recover.

Northern services between Sheffield and Nottingham are currently unable to call at Dronfield. Buses are running between the stations, extending journey times by up to 30 minutes.

The British Transport Police has sadly confirmed that a person has died after being hit by a train this morning.

A British Transport Police (BTP) spokesperson said: “BTP officers attended the line close to Dronfield Station in Derbyshire on Saturday, June 18 after a report that a person had been struck by a train.

“Officers from BTP and Derbyshire Police attended the incident, which was reported to police at 10:36am and is currently being treated as non-suspicious.

“Paramedics from Derbyshire Ambulance also attended but the person was pronounced dead at the scene.

“A file will be prepared for the coroner.”

Passengers now face delays of up to an hour. When the line reopens, trains may be delayed until at least 1pm as services return to normal.

The routes affected are CrossCountry between Newcastle Central and Southampton Central / Bournemouth; between Glasgow Central and Plymouth / Penzance; between Edinburgh and Reading East Midlands; trains between Sheffield and London St Pancras International; between Liverpool Lime Street and Norwich Northern; and between Leeds and Nottingham.
