Trucker ends up in court

A nightmare week culminated in redundancy for a South Normanton trucker caught over the limit after his wife left him.

To rub salt into his wounds, John Commons was apparently “shopped” by a drinking colleague.

Police received a tip-off that Commons had driven a Ford Focus away from Chesterfield town centre after drinking.

Officers found him at the wheel just off the M1 in Mansfield Road, South Normanton, and stopped the car. He failed a roadside breath test and was arrested.

Chesterfield magistrates heard that he went on to give a reading of 47mcgs of alcohol in 100mls of breath, the limit being 35mcgs.

Commons, 43, of Downing Street, South Normanton, admitted drink-driving on June 23. He committed the same offence six years ago.

The Bench fined him £125, with £85 costs, and imposed a three-year driving ban.

“This offence comes on the back of the worst week in his life,” said Mark Salt, for Commons.

“His wife rang and said she was ending their 22-year relationship. He was invited out by friends and he had a couple of drinks,” said Mr Salt.
