Crich Tramway Village is to commemorate the 50 year anniversary since the closure of the Glasgow Tramway System on Saturday and Sunday.

The National Tramway Museum is home to seven Glasgow trams which were rescued by enthusiasts in the 1950s and 60s as it became clear that the system’s days were numbered.

No 22 was used as a VIP tram to convey a royal party including the Prince and Princess of Wales.

Event Organiser James Blythe said “Visitors to the Glasgow 50 weekend can expect to witness a series of unique displays and events to mark the anniversary including the opportunity to ride on various vintage trams throughout the weekend, with the operational Glasgow trams in service on both days. Our staff and volunteers have pulled out all the stops to make it a memorable event.”

A highlight of the weekend will be the launch of Glasgow 1068, previously Paisley 68, which has recently undergone a repaint to return it to the Glasgow Corporation livery. The tram, carrying representatives of the Tramway Museum Society (TMS) and the Scottish Tramway & Transport Society (STTS) who have funded the repaint, will be ceremoniously piped out of the workshop.

There will also be a display of the evolution of the Glasgow tramcar and the system’s distinctive route colours, as well as a Glasgow tram procession.

Other events planned over the weekend include photographic opportunities with non-operational tramcars, shunting of trams on the depot fan and a surplus book sale in the Exhibition Hall. Full details of the planned events and operational tramcars on each day are available on the website www.tramway.co.uk.
