As the Tour de France is set to sweep through the Peak District National Park, Chesterfield-based cycle store JE James and the Derbyshire Times are encouraging people to take part in the Ashgate Hospice Flagg Cycle Challenge.

JE James Cycles, of Progress House, Brimington Road North, is sponsoring the Flagg Cycle Challenge charity ride with the DT which rolls out over ten, 25 and 55 mile Peak District routes on July 27.

The three-week Tour de France will be holding a stage from Leeds to Harrogate on July 5 and on July 6 the York to Sheffield stage visits the Peak as it wends its way through Holme Moss, Woodhead, Bradfield, Penistone and Langsett, before its third UK stage on July 7 goes from Cambridge to London. It then crosses to France before it finishes in Paris on July 27 - on the same day as the Flagg Challenge.

And for inspired fans, what better way to mark and enjoy the race’s final day than to take part in the JE James and DT Flagg Hospice Cycle Challenge in the morning of July 27 before catching up on an afternoon’s televised coverage of the Tour.

Graeme Huston, DT editor, said: “JE James has helped set us all up for a great charity cycle challenge which will coincide brilliantly with the end of the Tour de France.

“The cycle store has long been involved in community initiatives supporting cycle teams, charities and fundraisers who take on sponsored rides for a variety of worthy causes.

“It’s a pleasure to have such a community-orientated cycle outlet on board to support Ashgate Hospice as the charity helps those facing life threatening illnesses and their families.”

JE James boasts a range of cycling expertise over two floors including mountain and road bikes, a service and repairs workshop and accessories and parts.

Budding Flagg cyclists can pick up all they need including cycling clothes, protective gear, turbo trainers and nutritional supplies.

Experienced staff measure, fit and match riders to the right types of bikes for commuting, leisure riding, mountain biking and road racing.

During the Flagg Challenge, JE James will be helping to provide a feed station with refreshments and is selling raffle tickets for a Specialized bike.

Flagg Challenge entry costs £20 and people can register via www.ashgatehospicevents.co.uk/bike/bike.htm or get details by contacting events@ashgatehospice.nhs.uk, Emily Evans on 01246 568801, or Derbyshire Times’ Jon Cooper at jon.cooper@derbyshiretimes.co.uk and 01246 504524.
