Tom took on ten mile run

A Ripley student awarded a Ripley and Heanor News award for his fundraising efforts is at it again - this time taking on a ten mile charity run.
Tom Roberts was handed a 2012 New Year Honour Award by the News for his part busking on behalf of Cancer Research UK in the freezing cold of December 2010.
But now the 20-year-old second year student at Nottingham Trent - who was diagnosed with a rare bone cancer when he was 16, has tackled the Great South Run for the Ellen MacArthur Trust.
The charity aims to help rebuild confidence in young people in recovery from cancer by taking them on unique sailing trips.
After finishing treatment for Ewing’s Sarcoma in 2009, Tom was asked if he would like to go sailing with the trust.
He said: “I have experienced first-hand the amazing, inspirational work the trust does and the difference it can make to young people.
he added: “Going sailing with the trust after treatment was a valuable step in my recovery, I hope more young people can be helped and given the life changing experience with the money raised.”
The Bupa Great South Run took place in Portsmouth on Sunday with 24,000 people taking part.
Tom is hoping to raise £500 for the charity -which would pay to take one person on a four day sailing trip. To make a donation visit his fundraising page: mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/tomroberts.
