Teen rode on stolen scooter

A ‘bored’ Ilkeston teenager received a stolen £1500 scooter and used it to ride across fields, a court heard.

The Sym bike was recovered from Daniel McCarthy four days later but by then it was unusable.

It had been stolen from a driveway overnight on April 13 and taken to McCarthy’s then-home in Pear Tree Avenue, Ripley, by a pal.

When police found it on the front garden it was extensively damaged, its steering lock had been removed and its ignition bypassed and it was covered in mud and without registration plates.

McCarthy, 19, initially told police he and a friend bought the scooter online but he later said a friend brought it to his home and he knew it was stolen.

McCarthy, now of Blackwell Avenue, Ilkeston, admitted handling stolen goods and was given a 7pm-7am curfew for eight weeks and ordered to do 100 hours unpaid work.

He must also pay £500 compensation.

He told a probation officer that he used the scooter because he was bored. He had since moved from his mother’s home to his father’s address to distance himself from “negative influences” and he had stopped drinking, which was at the root of his offending.

“He was asked to help hotwire the scooter but he didn’t know how to do it so they took it to a neighbour and then rode it around fields,” said Matt Evans, for McCarthy.
