Teen in court for head-butt

A youth was head-butted by a Somercotes teenager who claimed his girlfriend had been threatened.

The victim, who is 17 and cannot be identified, was with friends outside Riddings community centre when he was attacked.

He told police a group
arrived including some girls he knew and Zak Smith, who he had not met before. Smith , 18, walked straight over, accused him of threatening two of the girls and grabbed his neck and squeezed it.

“He said he hadn’t. Out of the blue, the defendant head-butted him under the eye. The victim contacted his mother, who contacted police,” Lynn Manning, prosecuting, told Chesterfield magistrates.

He said he returned to the scene soon after to apologise but the victim’s mother was present and, fearing retribution, he gave a false name. Smith, unemployed, of Bonnington Drive, Somercotes, admitted the October 17 assault and was ordered to do 80 hours unpaid work and pay £150 compensation to his victim.

Kevin Tomlinson, for Smith, said he was unaware at the time the victim knew his girlfriend. “He says the complainant threatened to break her jaw for some reason.

“You made a mess of that lad’s face. It’s time for you to ‘get real’ as they say and start acting more sensibly. Don’t waste your future,” presiding magistrate David Summers told him.
