Teen crashed his dad’s car

A boozy teenager crashed into a fence on a roundabout after taking his dad’s car without permission, a court has heard.

The owner of the Saab 9000 was on holiday in India when Conor Edwards, 19, decided to take it for a spin at 2am.

A motorist saw it travelling along the A38 at South Normanton before colliding with a fence and a road sign at Junction 28 roundabout.

“The witness took the keys from him, believing he was drunk, and police were called,” said Laura Dyke, prosecuting at Chesterfield Magistrates’ Court. Edwards, of Market Street, South Normanton, went on to give a reading of 81mcgs of alcohol in 100mls of breath – more than double the 35mcgs limit.

He admitted drink-driving, aggravated vehicle-taking and driving without insurance and a full licence on July 10. He had no previous convictions.

The JPs ordered him to do 100 hours unpaid work and handed him a 20-month driving ban, to be cut to 15 months if he passes a drink-driving rehabilitation course, with £85 costs

“It was a stupid blip and he regrets it,” said Bob Sowter, for Edwards.

“His parents divorced five years ago and he was living with his father.”
