An award winning real ale pub in Ripley is to open a new bar with a difference – in a stables at the bottom of its beer
garden.

Steve Cresswell, landlord of the Beehive at Peasehill, will unveil his pub’s newest addition on Saturday, August 4

The stable, set a few metres from the main building features a rolling selection of ales and speciality beers from local producers, served straight from the barrel.

Steve, 50, said: “There will be something different on in there every week, from local craft breweries, to those in Scotland and Cornwall.

He continued: “I’ve always liked real ales – but I think Ripley needs something a bit different – it has a real rustic charm.”

“It’s like a secret garden down there.”

The idea to open a bar in stable was inspired by the building’s history, Steve said.

When beer was transported from the former Home Brewery in Daybrook, Nottinghamshire, to pubs in the Ripley area during the late 19th and early 20th centuries it would arrive via horse and cart, or a dray.

The horses would stop on Peasehill, Steve says, for a drink or a night in a stables. “It seemed quite fitting”, he added.

Steve has been landlord of the Ripley pub for 19 years and says ale is making a comeback.

“At the moment real ales are very popular –they seem to be out performing lagers.

“There’s so many flavours; there are dark ones, light ones, hoppy ones and malty ones. Blonde beers are more popular now as well.”

The Beehive, which Steve describes as one of the most typically English pubs in the country, made it into the prestigious 2011 Good Pub guide and was given an award for keeping the best mild in Amber Valley by CAMRA.

The pub is open from noon until 3pm and then 5pm until 10pm throughout the week. At weekends it is open from noon until 10pm.
