Derbyshire’s title-winning captain Wayne Madsen has signed a new three-year contract.

The 28-year-old batsman becomes the latest player to commit his future to the club, securing a new deal to remain at the County Ground until the end of the 2015 season.

In his first season as captain, Madsen led a young Derbyshire side to the LV= County Championship Division Two title, their first trophy since 1993.

The skipper was the club’s leading run-scorer during the successful campaign, compiling 885 runs at 38.47, including a career-best score of 231 not out as he and Tom Poynton added 261 for the ninth wicket against Northamptonshire, just 23 runs short of a 102-year-old world record.

Since debuting midway through the 2009 season, Madsen has played 56 First-Class matches for Derbyshire, scoring 3,404 runs at an average of 36.21, including 12 centuries.

The right-hander has also appeared in 35 List A games for the county, scoring 1,110 runs at an average of 39.64, as well as scoring 510 runs at 22.17 from 35 Twenty20 outings.

Madsen said: ‘What we achieved last year was incredible and this is a club that‘s growing and moving in the right direction on and off the field. To lead this squad is a great honour, I’m so excited about where we are heading and we’re looking forward to challenging ourselves in Division One next season.”

Head coach Karl Krikken added: “You can see by his record that Wayne is a fine player. He has topped our run scoring in first-class cricket in 2012 and, with that double-hundred at Northampton, he produced one of the most vital performances of the year.

“The way he has led the side this season, in his first year in the job, has been absolutely magnificent.”
