Seven years for robbery

A man has been sentenced to seven and a half years for an armed robbery at a Nuthall convenience store.

Daniel Lawrence was convicted after dropping a black balaclava at the scene during his escape, leaving vital DNA evidence behind.

The 24-year-old went into McColl’s, in Ash Crescent, and pointed a fake gun at the shop assistant before taking cash from the till and running off.

Lawrence, of Beckley Road, Broxtowe, pleaded guilty to robbery and possession of an imitation firearm.

At Nottingham Crown Court on Tuesday he was sentenced to seven-and-a-half years for each offence, to run concurrently.

DS Steve Wragg, from Beeston CID, said: “The robbery was a terrifying ordeal for the shop assistant who was confronted by a man brandishing what looked like a firearm.

“She was made to open the till so Lawrence could snatch the money from inside.

“What he didn’t know was that the balaclava he dropped contained his DNA which was used to identify him as the offender.”

The armed robbery took place back in January, when the Advertiser spoke to residents living nearby.

One resident reported hearing someone waiting outside shouting ‘go, go, go’ and another reported hearing screams coming from inside the shop.

The Spa shop next door has also been robbed in the past when crow bars were used.
