Selston pair celebrate a diamond time
Dolph and Betty Coles of Selston, who celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary recently.
A Selston couple, who devoted their spare time to helping youngsters enjoy sport, have celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.
Dolph and Betty Coles celebrated with a party.
Dolph, 85, who is one of six, attended Selston Church of England School. He left school aged 14 and went to work at a pipe yard – but he was soon envious of his pals who were working down the pit.
Eventually, Dolph began working at the Bull and Butcher pit in Selston and later at Pye Hill.
Betty, who attended Portland Row, Bagthorpe and Matthew Holland schools, worked for companies including Black’s Sportswear and Sutton’s Metal Box.
Nottingham Forest fan Dolph has always been an ardent sports supporter and enjoys cricket and darts. Betty loves gardening and Tom Jones.
With support from Betty, Dolph also ran Selston’s under-16s football team.
The couple have four children, Margaret, Tony, married to Bridget, David, whose partner is Tina and Michael, whose partner is Anita. Their grandchildren are Emily, Natasha, Ashleigh, Liam and Reuben.
The pair got married at St Helen’s Church before enjoying a honeymoon in Kent.Dolph said: “It was a beautiful day.”
I remember my best man came to my mum’s and he said, ‘let’s go and have a whiskey’.”
