Scouts set off on trip of a lifetime

Beauvale Scouts have jetted off on an international camp where they will join 35,000 other Scouts and Guides from around the world.

The 33 scouts and leaders boarded a plane last Friday for the Denmark Jamboree after each raising £600 to fund the trip.

Beauvale assistant district commissioner James Greenfield said he was ‘tremendously proud’ of the Scouts after their ‘relentless’ fundraising efforts.

Mr Greenfield said: “I am tremendously proud of the contingent members who are a credit to their parents, Scouting, their schools but most of all, to themselves. “

“I think this is an impressive commitment by the young members and I personally have been heartened by the positive comments relayed to me by the general public.”

The Scouts, from Eastwood, Kimberley, Greasley, Brinsley, Nuthall and Awsworth, have done all sorts to raise the cash.

They have organised parties, done 17 supermarket bag packing events, hosted a fashion show, done litter picks, four car boot sales, sold cakes at summer fairs and raised money at big events like the Eastwood Chrsitmas light switch on.

The money will cover overs air and train fares, two nights in Copenhagen and the Jamboree itself.

The camp will enable the group, aged seven to 11, to experience Scouting the Danish way and they will take part in various challenges and activities.

Each group on the trip will construct its own campsite using pioneering poles, rope and cord and will cook over an open fire.

Mr Greenfield said the Jamboree would enable the boys to ‘discover different cultures and religions, use the natural environment as a learning tool and promote the solidarity between Scouts and Guides from around the world’.

The assistant district commisioner wants to thank all of the local parish and town councils and shops for their donations and support.
