Teachers across Derbyshire are set to strike next week.

Members of the National Union of Teachers will strike on Wednesday, March 26, over their workload, long hours, and fears of a later retirement age.

Heanor Gate Science College has already confirmed it will be closed with the majority of schools in the Amber Valley area expected to be ‘substantially’ affected.

Ian Stevenson, the Yorkshire and Derbyshire regional secretary of the National Union of Teachers expects disruptions.

He said: “We’re calling out all our members to take some form of action on the 26th.

“Ninety per cent of the schools across Derbyshire have at least one teacher represented by the National Union of Teachers and up to 60 per cent of secondary school’s have NUT representation.”

A spokesman for Swanwick Hall School and Aldercar Community Language College were unable to comment on whether there would be any action, while a spokesman from Mill Hill School in Ripley said it would be very unlikely that they would be affected by the strikes.
