School film snags £6K boost for garden dream
a HEANOR junior school has won a £6,000 cash boost after making a short film to promote its plans for a community garden.
The ten-minute video, made by the staff, pupils and friends of Mundy C of E Junior School, was uploaded to Youtube and collected the most votes in a NatWest Community Force competition.
The money will be spent on a community garden, in which the school plans to grow produce, rear chickens and teach outdoor lessons.
Project manager Jane Wells said: “It is amazing when you consider how many other great projects we were up against. “Each voting area had three winners, ours was Derby where there was 28 projects all getting votes. “What is even more amazing is that in the whole of the East Midlands our school came second out of 410 projects!”
The film was shot in one morning in September and edited by Jane’s 17-year-old son Chris. It features mock-ups using cardboard boxes and a computer-generated image of what the finished garden will look like. Local firms donated seating and paper for posters and fliers.
It scored 522 votes, beating applications by the Quad in Derby and the Treetops hospice in Risley.
Ann Lang, branch manager for the NatWest in Heanor, came to the school and told excited pupils and staff about the win and presented the cheque in a special assembly.
Jane added: “We want to thank everyone who took the time to vote for us considering how difficult the voting process was.”
