Railway weekend will celebrate the sixties

Midland Railway – Butterley is to host a 1960s weekend on July 14 and 15.

The railway will be using a range of vehicles that would have been used in the swinging decade with steam and diesel locomotives, diesel multiple units, carriages and wagons in use from that decade.

Alan Calladine, the Midland Railway Trust Development Office said: “This will be a great weekend reliving this momentous decade when everything started to change. “Railways in particular changed with the infamous Beeching report.

“The move from steam to diesel and electric power and the decline in the branch lines that had been a part of life for 100 years.

“The Midland Railway – Butterley has preserved a great deal of railway equipment that was in use in the 1960s and is ideally situated to show off this decade.”
